National Pact: when the construction sector shifts into high gear

Vinci Construction Monaco recently signed up to the National Energy Transition Pact.

Signing the Pact, Branch Manager Lionel Dini stressed the extent to which Vinci Construction, and indeed the Vinci Group, was sensitive to environmental issues.

Vinci Construction sees itself as a driving force and an example to follow in this area, and the ‘Environment Challenge’ has become a priority. The policy is set by the Group, which provides the impetus, but it is implemented in practice at the local level, with clear, specific feedback. And employees are much more demanding than they were 10 years ago. Our staff push us to make progress and our action is also a reflection of their expectations. In addition, by signing the National Pact, we are also involving all of our subcontractors in the effort. We will always act as a driving force.”

Guillaume Castell also noted that while raising colleagues’ awareness about environmental issues had become an everyday affair, Vinci Construction still had room for improvement in some areas. The main challenges involve working on its CO2 impact, supplies, choice of materials, transport, processing, etc. That said, there have already been huge improvements in many areas, including the purchase or hire of electrical construction machinery and equipment, the use of local aggregates, the installation of soundproofing walls, the systematisation of traceability and the use of LEDs for all site lighting.

Additionally driven by the impetus of Paris, the Group is committed to transitioning as quickly as possible to using only 100% low-carbon concrete.

The Testimonio II project uses ultra-low-carbon concrete.

Annabelle Jaeger-Seydoux, Director of the Mission for Energy Transition, hailed the impact of this signature both symbolically and for what it means in practice.

The construction industry has real scope for improvement, and I hope that your commitment today will result in other companies following in your footsteps... Actions specific to construction are essential if we are to reduce the sector’s carbon impact. In recent years, and particularly since the establishment of BD2M, stakeholders have launched a strong initiative. Your determination shows us that the regulations are not causing you problems; on the contrary, you are taking them and turning them into a strength.”

Finally, the company has also introduced some other green initiatives, such as the @Terrae shared garden on the roof of the site facilities, which is soon to be joined by some hives! The Group has additionally launched a best practices app to enable effective communication with staff and, every two months, holds a training week in Monaco for employees on environmental issues (bio-based materials, biodiversity, etc.).

It’s worth noting that Vinci Construction has 98 people in Monaco; 390 people on construction sites.

We welcome our new signatory!

Be like Vinci Construction... Follow the Coach and sign the Pact!
