Huge success for first Monegasque Repairathon!

The first Monegasque Repairathon was held on Saturday 27 November. The event was jointly organised by Monaco City Hall and the Monaco Mission for Energy Transition in the Condamine Market halls.

Forming part of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR Monaco), the Repairathon’s aim was to match skills and needs in terms of the repair of various consumer goods.

Children’s jeans with inevitably “skinned” knees, an electric oven, coffee machines, vacuum cleaners, a torn pair of shorts, a broken bike and even electronic and computer equipment – each request had been reviewed in advance to consider whether the item was suitable for repair.

The group of “repairers” included high school student Lily, retiree Jean Michel, employee Christophe and an entire family, including son Matt, who was just 10!

Among those “with something to repair” were Monegasque nationals and residents weary of the planned obsolescence principle which forces us to throw things away at the first sign of trouble...

Several calls for volunteers were put out via our social media pages as well as those belonging to Monaco City Hall and the Monaco Mutual Aid group on Facebook.

A real example of cooperation leading to a great moment of sharing, mutual assistance and conviviality.

A few figures:

Number registered: 33 requests for registration were received, 24 of which were accepted. On the day itself, 17 people attended, plus 3 who came along without an appointment.

Number of repairers: 8 (sewing, bikes, electrical appliances, electronics and wooden items)

Outcome:

- 19 items (out of the 29 brought in) returned to working order + 3 items requiring more detailed examination, which were collected by the repairers for repair at their own homes/premises (we’ll keep you informed)

- 6,800 kilograms of resources saved (since 1 January 2019)

- 78 smiles, 10 business cards swapped, 6 giggles, 1 mystery item and an enthusiasm shared by everyone!
