Electric vehicles: easier charging with MONACO ON

A press briefing was held on Wednesday 22 September to cover the roll-out of the Monaco ON network of charging stations installed over the last 18 months in the Principality.

The briefing, which marked the close of European Mobility Week, was attended by the government teams involved: the Mission for Energy Transition, the Department of Urban Amenities and the Public Car Parks Office, as well as the electricity and gas operator SMEG.

With Monaco ON, the Ministry of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development has adopted an ambitious strategy to support electric transport by upgrading the available infrastructure.

There were already a large number of outlets and now the charging points – which will remain free – are more powerful and can be easily identified by their yellow colour. No subscription is required to use them.

The Government’s stated aim is to gradually replace the self-service outlets with electric charging stations featuring several charging points to make charging electric vehicles ever more efficient and accessible to as many people as possible.

There are currently 113 Monaco ON charging points in seven public car parks in the Principality. Three new car parks will have a total of 80 new charging points installed by the end of the year. On the country’s streets, there are currently 17 charging points, each of which can accommodate two vehicles, and a further 12 will be added by the end of the year (seven for four-wheeled vehicles and five for two-wheeled vehicles).

By the end of 2021, eco-friendly vehicles will make up 10% of all cars in Monaco. With its offer of faster, more locally available charging, Monaco ON is meeting growing demand from individuals and corporate fleets: the turnover rate at charging points is evidence of their efficiency and success.

Through its collaboration with SMEG, the State is also providing users with a high level of service quality, including 24/7 assistance and support.

Since 1994, the Prince’s Government has pursued a policy that strongly incentivises a switch to electric vehicles, offering subsidies to help purchase such vehicles, free charging, a reduction on the cost of public car park season tickets, free on-street parking and a free annual vehicle registration sticker.
